Chat in Bro is read-only. There is no box to type in and no way to send a message or moderate.
Where chat is
Upright, chat is under the tiles. Sideways, it is the right-hand column. With Videos off, it fills the screen.
The tabs
A row of tabs appears once you have a channel that can show chat. From the left:
- Events, see below.
- All, only when you monitor two or more channels. It merges them into one list.
- One tab for each channel, with its logo and name, in the order you added them. Rumble is last.
Kick and Twitch tabs appear as soon as you add the channel, even if it is offline. A YouTube tab appears once a live video is found and you have added a YouTube key. A Rumble tab appears once you have added your link. A custom URL has no chat and no tab. If the tab you are on is removed, Bro goes back to All. When only one channel is left there is no All tab, so Bro shows that channel.
A chat line
Each line reads: platform logo, time, badges, name, message. Names use the chatter’s own colour. Emotes show as pictures, including animated ones, and show as their name while loading. Badges show for Kick and Twitch. A message the platform removed shows crossed out with (deleted), (timeout) or (banned). A line that says loaded from history separates older messages from new ones. Kick, YouTube and Rumble load recent history when they connect. Twitch does not.
On the All and channel tabs the list jumps to the newest message every time one arrives. Bro keeps the newest 120 lines per channel.
Kick badges
Kick badges use Kick’s own pictures. A channel can also use its own pictures for subscriber badges, so those can look different from the one below. Twitch badges are Twitch’s own pictures. YouTube and Rumble messages show no badges.
| Badge | Name | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcaster | The channel owner. | |
| Moderator | A moderator of the channel. | |
| VIP | A VIP of the channel. | |
| Verified | A verified account. | |
| Founder | Kick’s Founder badge. | |
| OG | Kick’s OG badge. | |
| Subscriber | A subscriber to the channel. | |
| Sub gifter | Someone who has gifted subscriptions. | |
| Sidekick | Kick’s Sidekick badge. | |
| Bot | A bot account. |
The Events tab
Events lists the big moments from all your channels, newest at the top, one coloured line each.
| Symbol | Event |
|---|---|
| ⭐ | Subscription |
| 🎁 | Gift |
| 💚 | Kicks (Kick) |
| 🎟️ | Redemption |
| 🚀 | Raid |
| 💵 | Rant (Rumble) or Super Chat (YouTube) |
Each line shows the platform logo, the time, the symbol and a short sentence, such as river_runner sent Hell Yeah · 1 Kick or sunny_side has raided with 12 viewers. Not every platform sends every kind. Twitch sends subscriptions, gift upgrades and raids. Kick sends everything except Rants and Super Chats. Rumble sends Rants and gifted subscriptions. YouTube sends memberships, gifts and Super Chats. Events are text only, with no pop-up and no sound. With none yet it says Subs, gifts, and raids from your monitored channels show here.
The filter button
While Events is the selected tab, a funnel button appears at the right end of the tab row. Tap it for a list of the event kinds with a tick box each. All are ticked to start with. The list stays open until you tap outside it, and your choice is kept until you fully close the app.
Read aloud
Read aloud speaks new chat out loud with your phone’s text-to-speech, on that phone only. It reads messages from all your channels whichever tab you are on. It never reads history, events, or what was already in chat when you turned it on. Speed and pitch come from your phone’s own text-to-speech settings. If many messages arrive at once, the oldest waiting ones are skipped.
Turn it on with the TTS button, or in Settings → Channel settings. Press and hold the button to open the options. They are greyed out until read aloud is on.
- Announce sender
- Off to start. Says “name says” before each message.
- Skip emotes, Skip emoji, Skip bot messages, Skip commands
- All on to start. Bots are found with a built-in list of known names plus Kick’s bot badge. Commands are messages that start with !.
- Banned words
- Empty to start. A word on the list is never spoken, whole words only, any capital letters. Type a word and tap the plus button to add it, and the bin next to a word removes it. A word can be up to 100 characters and the list holds 2000. The rest of the message is still read.
- When a banned word is hit
- Censor beep (starting choice), Silence or Duck quack plays in its place.
- Treat repeated asterisks as a banned word
- Off to start. A run of three or more asterisks, which a platform uses when it censors a word, triggers the same action.
- Random voice per sender
- Off to start. Gives each chatter a different voice that stays the same for them.
- Voice
- Shows when random voice is off. Pick Engine default or an installed voice, and tap its play button to hear it. Only voices installed on your phone, in your phone’s language and able to work without internet, are listed. Get more voices/accents (system settings) opens your phone’s voice download screen.
These choices are separate from the “Hide” filters under Chat. You can hide something on screen and still hear it, or the other way round.
To keep chat and read-aloud going while you use another app, see Keep chat updating in the background.
YouTube chat
Video from a YouTube channel works with no key. Chat, viewers and uptime need your own free key. In Channel settings, paste it into YouTube Data API key (for chat). Get one at console.cloud.google.com by turning on the YouTube Data API v3 and creating an API key. One key covers all your YouTube channels. Keep it private.
Messages in red
- Having trouble connecting to this channel — double-check the channel name or API key in Settings. On the All tab it says “one of your channels” and shows only when no channel is connected.
- Check your Rumble API URL in Settings — it looks invalid or expired.
- Rumble unavailable right now — this usually clears up on its own.
